A mother has told how her birth control implant began to leave her body just 24 hours after it was inserted.
Louise, from the UK, suffered a rare reaction after having her third implanton device, which needs to be replaced every three years, inserted into her arm.
She said she had no hope that she would remember to take a pill every day. She heard horror stories about IUDs and personal medical trauma that meant she didn’t want to have an injection every three months.
But 24 hours after the spill had put her in her arm, her husband offered to see how she was recovering. It was then that the pair realized they were getting out of Louise’s skin.
“Unfortunately on Friday evening neither my doctors nor any clinics were open,” she told news.com.au.
I went to the ER on Saturday, but they advised me to wait until the clinic opened on Monday.
I did my best to keep it clean and kept the clear band aid on as instructed and waited until I got back to the clinic.
But as the weekend went on, she slowly continued to leave her side. She said she had never had any problems with him in the past. The mother said it was not painful at all. The only time she had problems was if she moved her arm a certain way and hit herself.
A few times my toddler leaned on it, which was uncomfortable, but definitely not painful, she said.
I have never had any problems with it in the past and the staff at the clinic were keen to point out that this is extremely rare.
Louise shared an image of her arm with the device popping out on social media because she thought it was cool.
While I struggle with performing medical procedures on myself, I still find medicine in general fascinating, she said.
I don’t want to push people to get implants, I still think they’re great, but I also think it’s good to be aware that this could happen because I had no idea.
Reaction has ranged from my husband’s outright panic to morbid curiosity from friends and strangers on the Internet.
Louise said she had not received an explanation as to why it had happened. She was told it was rare.
During my long hospital stay after the disastrous birth of my sons, my body rejected five cannulae, a catheter and countless blood tests. So it seems like the rejection of medical interventions is just an inappropriate quirk that my body has developed, she said.
Once she got to the clinic, the nurse took her out and Louise said she barely noticed,
I want to reiterate that I do not want to take people off this contraceptive, she said.
I already have another one on my arm, this time it’s secured with some steri tape and it looks like it’ll stay put for now.
Dr Zac Turner told news.com.au the situations were as rare as finding a $2 coin in the washing machine.
It’s not unheard of, but it’s certainly unusual enough to raise an eyebrow or two, he said.
He said there are three reasons why this could happen: incorrect insertion, skin reaction such as swelling or user factors. This includes certain skin types, body composition or even sudden movements after the procedure.
He said women should not worry or let this stop them from choosing this as a birth control option.
Most Implanons stay where they are placed, quietly doing their job. However, if your significant other decides to arrange an outing, it’s essential to know the signs. Check to see if the device is visible under the skin or, in extreme cases, completely outside it, he said.
Pain, redness or swelling at the insertion site and unusual hormone-related symptoms such as spotting or an unexpected period are also things to watch out for.
